Animal Elements in English Town, Village, and City Names
Below is a spreadsheet containing some 708 English Towns, Villages, and Cities, all of which contain in their earliest attested forms an element which is the name of an animal. This was put together as part of my masters degree, for a unit on English Place Names, and was completed in May 2025. The names were collected from A.D. Mills Dictionary of English Place Names (2nd ed.), also used in verifying this information was The English Place Name Society's Key to English Place Names (link: Key to English Place-names)and online Survey of English Place Names (link: Survey of English Place-Names).
Details on my own findings will be added to the Blog once grading is completed (Becca and Jayne, that's on you now).
In fact, this spreadsheet is the entire reason for the creation of this website as I needed some way to disseminate the information and it is simply too large to easily format into a word document. It is also my hope that this spreadsheet may be of some help to anyone else's research, which is another reason I have decided to make it available to everyone.
Update 25th May 2025: Correction to above text to correct mistaken statement that there were 709 entries, there are in fact 708. In unrelated news an unintentional duplicate entry was also removed from the document.
